The Olympic Peninsula

I have just finalized the placement for my next assignment. We will be staying in Washington for the summer but we're moving north...about as far north as we can get without a passport. I took a position in Port Angeles, WA, which is a quaint little town on the tip of the Olympic Peninsula. I am so excited to be spending my summer in this outdoor lover's paradise!

Happy Easter!

We've been busy the past few weekends. We've been to Seattle a few times, gone on a few short hikes, visited a waterfall in Olympia and a bonsai garden in Port Orchard. The plan was to stay here in the Seattle area until the fall but I am not going to be able to re-sign at my current facility. Hopefully I will be able to find something in the area but right now, its all up in the air.

Bonsai Garden

After killing 2 bonsai trees, I found out from one of the workers at the bonsai garden that it probably wasn't even my fault. Only 20 out of 100 survive in their nursery and only one out of 100 survive in the wild.

This one was my favorite. Look at that gnarled trunk! The bonsai trees that can be bought from a store are grown at a normal rate and then pruned back to keep them small. Other bonsai trees occur naturally in the environment when a tree grows slowly because it lives in such harsh conditions-rocky soil with little nutrients and low sunlight. Some of the trees at this garden have been "growing" since as far back as 1250 AD.

Donkey and his Auntie Danielle take a break.

One of our hikes ended here. You can see the white caps of the Olympic Mountains in the background.

Daffodils are in bloom everywhere!

Olympia has a lot of natural beauty, despite being the capitol city of Washington.
